Seven Bar Ranch's Location

There's a great neighborhood in Northwest Albuquerque called Seven Bar Ranch. Seven Bar Ranch is located adjacent to the border of Rio Rancho and is very near the Rio Grande. The borders of Seven Bar Ranch are Coors Bypass to the east and Golf Course Blvd to the west, Westside Blvd to the north and the Calabacillas Arroyo to the south.

The History of Seven Bar Ranch

Seven Bar Ranch was originally part of the much larger Black Ranch. In 1929, 20,600 acres of the westside were bought by the black family. The acreage ran from what is now Alameda Blvd south to Paseo del Norte, and between the Rio Grande and the Rio Puerco. Originally the Ranch was called the "Black and Ray" Ranch, but was more commonly referred to as "Black" Ranch. Years later the Ranch was renamed "Seven Bar Ranch" after the Black family's cattle brand.

The land served as a family ranch, with a modest family house. In 1947, Seven Bar Airport and Flying Service was started.

In 1962, 8,500 acres were sold and were developed into Paradise Hills. Another 4,500 acres were sold in 1968 and were added to the Paradise Hills area and to what's now called Ventana Ranch. Read more about Ventana Ranch Neighborhood.

Today, Chili's restaurant stands where the original house stood, and the land where Seven Bar Airport was located is now Cottonwood Mall.

Sounds like a fun place to visit. I was in NM a long time ago, doing some hiking in Philmont and loved it. Your article makes me want to go back and see that beautiful country again.

Philmont, huh? Good for you. Unfortunately my sons are no longer in Boy Scouts. Maybe I could just go by myself...
